This is a quick review of the new Ground Control F1 XS frames which I’ve had the opportunity to skate on a regular basis. I skated the GC Formula 1 frames before these and that is why I had to try out the F1 XS frames.
First off the main difference between the frames is that GC significantly increased the groove width (XS stands for extra-wide split). The original Formula’s have a 4″ width between the two middle axle bolts whereas the new F1 XS’ have a 4-9/16″ width which is over a half inch increase. This increased the amount of material that was put into the groove area so it also increased the weight of the F1 XS frame by 2 oz (On a size 2) but I did not notice a difference on my skates.
My main concern was the functionality of the increased groove size which you can see in the pictures below (Click pics to enlarge):

New GC F1 XS Frames

I was a little worried that I might not like the wider groove but after quickly getting used to it, I believe that it has actually helped to improve my skating. I feel that I am just as locked in on grinds but that the wider groove allows me to need a little less precision when I first jump on a grind. The greatest benefit that I’ve noticed with the wider groove is that when grinding a ledge it is easier for me to stay on top of it on groove tricks and therefore grind farther with more control. This has been especially true on the beveled ledges (the ones with the corner cut off) which is nice because it seems like I’ve been skating more of those lately.
The other benefits to the F1 XS frames (which also applied to the Formula 1’s) is that they feel nice and solid on my skates, they slide well and they have a nice and long life span unless your out grinding McGritty ledges from dawn till dusk. When compared to the GC Featherlite frames, I always seem to favor the Formula frames and feel they are definitely worth the extra money for the reasons I just mentioned.
Overall thoughts on the Ground Control F1 XS frames:
The frames slide really well.
They feel nice and solid on my skates.
The wider groove has helped to improve my grinds, especially on ledges.
I believe that GC did in fact improve on their Formula frame design and that the F1 XS is not just marketing BS.
I would recommend the frames to others.
The only negative thing to mention is that I wish they were available in more colors.
