What can I say about an event that’s more like an early morning social session than a comp? First I’d probably want to talk about the background and what went down the night before. Ten years after the first Beat the Chump I throw it all together again for another round and what a round it was! All of Washington’s best skaters were in attendance. Just to name a few Randy Juarez, Kawika Jarman, Brandon Weller, Jeremy Townsend, Jake Dotson with up and coming stars like Adam Exline, Jt Truitt, Dustin Jamieson and Brendan Phillips. We kicked off the event bright and early on the last day of January. It was at the crack of dawn birds still chirping and the sun still rising. Had it not been for the event I probably would have slept till noon. The night before Aaron Feinberg and I decided it would be great idea to drink a few beers and play some pool.
As the night grew later it turned into shots of Jagermeister, late night Twinkies and Aaron inadvertently vomiting on my back lawn! At this point I thought of a clever contest name change “Beat the Drunk”. Needless to say it didn’t hold up since by the time I laced up the skates I was just overly tired and hung over. FYI for you younger guys it’s not a good combo to compete with.
Now back on topic. It was 9 a.m. and skaters were already lining up at the door. I was busy signing everyone up till about 10 a.m. It was nice to have a good amount of skaters in each division. Myself, Aaron Feinberg, and Rob Inks as head judges had our work cut out. Rob also announced the event since I competed with the advanced guys. Keep in mind I didn’t judge the advanced. Everyone skated really well as you will see in the video. It was a fast contest. We busted out everything by 12:30 and moved on with our lives. Some of us skated the outdoor park next door while the rest of us either went to eat or to catch up on some sleep. All in all I am happy with the way everything went down. Many thanks go out to Erik Allas (Photographer), Rob Inks Announcer/Judge), Aaron Feinberg (Judge), and Jonathan Roulston (Video). I couldn’t have asked for better help. Not to mention all of the great sponsors which continue to contribute to each and every one of my events!
