One Magazine’s little RED CAMERA skate day…

In case you haven’t already heard ONE magazine is putting together a little video. For the intro they decided to get their hands on a Red camera which is some 60k digital video camera with all the cool parts and what not, plus a whole crew to operate one for the weekend. They invited everyone cool down to Sunny Burbank, CA for a grand old session and this is a little post that more or less covers what went down Saturday. Don’t ask me about Sunday because I had to return some video tapes, if you know what I mean…

(picture of the RED cam. I found this using AOL’s superb browsing capabilities.)
A little bit about the camera they were using…
DIGITAL SUPER 35mm
Record 2540 progressive at up to 30 fps REDCODE RAW. With 4520 X 2540 pixels, Mysterium™ puts pure digital Ultra-High Def in the palm of your hand.
RED ONE™ and REDCINE™ also support down-sampling to 1080p and 720p for in-field monitoring and compatibility with non-linear editors.
You get the same breathtaking field of view and selective focus found on film cameras. Mysterium™ boasts a greater than 66db Signal to Noise Ratio thanks to its large 29 sq. micron pixels. And 12,065,000 pixels deliver resolution that can only be called Ultra High Definition.
How does 4K compare to 35mm film
Most 35 mm film outs that have gone through a scanning process have been scanned at 2K, or one quarter the resolution of 4K. Only extremely high content VFX work is generally scanned as high as 4K. Viewers that see RED footage for the first time either describe the quality as 65 mm film or “grainless 35″.
More pragmatically, it is the elimination of the cost of film and processing that make the RED ONE so economically attractive, in addition to its extraordinary quality.
What are the advantages of shooting digital vs. film
Beyond the obvious advantage of cost savings with the elimination of film and processing, both consumable products, it is the benefit of being able to watch dailies immediately, in real time, that make shooting digital such a superior experience. In adding the extraordinarily high quality of 4K capture and at such an affordable price, RED has tipped the scales for the industry.
Anyways you get the idea. Expensive, Rare, Expensive, coo and F***ING EXPENSIVE. Thing even came with a whole S.W.A.T. style van for all the equipment they had.
When we rolled up They were shooting some nasty steep rail with a bank (didn’t really get any pictures of anyone skating it). but the likes of D.George, I.Mcleoud, F.Morales, L.Shivak and M. Wodja were either killing it, or getting broke the F off. Anyways they (said film crew) had the whole track laid out and it looked super professional, a pretty strange sight for a rollerblading video shoot. Connor O’Brien was killing it on the camera while he was pushed along the tracks to get some of what I hope to be “the coolest footage ever.”
Oh yeah, I was fooled by the EZ UP tent too. I was like damn they are really doing it big, but that ended up belonging to the soccer turds. Notice how the rollerblading cast is not allowed to stand under it and is forced to stand in direct sun light like a bunch of second class citezens.
Cool guys always stand around… looking cool.
Shima started eying this container to bank.
Then he laced it. Gap up via table to straight air. Probably looks super good on the Red Cam.

Or perhaps even Brandon’s cam…

Or maybe even on the doggie cam…

Anyways. This was such a ground breaking for rollerblading all the local skateboard pros made sure to ‘roll’ out to show their support. Here we see Ryan Sheckler in the middle sporting RED (he loves the red cam that much). Rob Dyrdek to the left, Bam Margera is sitting right behind him, and Tony Hawk on the far left. The other two are Dog Town and Z Boy. (I’m not sure which one is which, I always get them mixed up).

Frank! Get Down from there!

Get that camera ready! hurry!
Julio was of course rocking the blue Alex Broskow Valo skates. I must say they are looking mighty fresh.

Oh and guess who forgot their skates… but remembered their party shades!
Blading legend Arlo Esienberg even made an appearance… and was in for a huge surprise. (no homo)
OMFG. And Franky pulls through with the biggest rollerblading stunt I’ve ever seen in person. Gap from the roof over the fence 540 into the bank. He didn’t just drop it. He jumped HIGH and stomped the F*** out of the landing on the bank. It was absolutely flawless.
On that note I can’t wait for the new ONE video (I’m sure you are popping a B by now anyways) Franky’s trick will be worth the purchase price alone, not to mention the many other tricks went down. And to think this was only the intro shot… So they really pulled out the big guns with the Red cam and went for a pro production, something that rollerblading has really yet to see in a LONG time (since Brink) lol.
